Your instructions are right on, but I would add this for new Bridgeport users, like those I trained at work. Hold the rear lever with your right hand. Hold the top/Front handle with the Left hand. When you bring your hands together, you are in low. When you spread them out, you are in high.

Re: Bridgeport Mill problems. -Turn on spindle. Of course, you could have broken a tooth on one of the gears, too, but mine doesn't change between high and low on the fly and makes a horrible grinding noise if you don't spin the spindle by hand to make sure it engages.

This one works great in high speed but in low speed in makes kind of a light growling almost like a bad bearing and has low torque. It will actually pull quite a bit harder in high speed at 500 RPM than it will at 100 RPM in low speed.
