I also barricade my ball mill with a thick inner layer of Styro surrounded by an outer layer of concrete blocks. The least you can do is prepare for a potential accident.

Recommended small ball mill for BP?
Somewhere around here I reported my results with various sizes of SS media from 3/16-1/2" diameter spheres, using a 4" diameter mill jar to mill the charcoal. The potassium nitrate grinds better with the larger 1/2" media. The sweet spot for charcoal in my rudimentary testing was 5/16" diameter.

There are a few critical decisions you have to make before building a ball mill for pyro use. Obviously, a ball mill requires a jar or jars & enough grinding media to fill one or several 50%. Jar size dictates the amount of grinding media you will need. Grinding media often costs as much as the mill (sometimes more).

I'm researching the cost of 3.5 liters of brass balls or cut rod. So far the cheapest I have been able to find brass balls is about $0.50 per ball and it's going to take a lot of therm. You can only run one jar at a time, and it will use around 75 of those balls. The stock mill runs at around 60 rpm. 90 rpm is ideal for that diameter jar. Easily done by cutting a section of vinyl tubing (Home Depot etc, a buck or two), splitting it with a knife, and sliding it over the drive rod.
