sulfide formula

Sulfide

Sulfide (British English also sulphide) is an inorganic anion of sulfur with the chemical formula S 2− or a compound containing one or more S 2− ions. Solutions of sulfide salts are corrosive. Sulfide also refers to large families of inorganic and organic compounds, e.g. lead sulfide and dimethyl sulfide.

Sulfide Ion (S²⁻)

Sulfide is a strong base, so solutions of sulfide in water are basic, due to hydrolysis. Sulfide solutions develop the characteristic rotten-egg odor of (ce{H2S}) as a result of this hydrolysis. [ce{S2^{-}(aq) + H2O(l) <=> HS^{-}(aq) + OH^{-}(aq) } nonumber ] with (K_b = 8.3) and [ce{H^{-}(aq) + H2O(l) <=> H2S(aq) + OH^{-}(aq ...

sulfide, any of three classes of chemical compounds containing the element sulfur. The three classes of sulfides include inorganic sulfides, organic sulfides (sometimes called thioethers), and phosphine sulfides. Inorganic sulfides are ionic compounds containing the negatively charged sulfide ion, S 2−; these compounds may be regarded as ...

Sulfide mineral | Definition, Examples, Identification, & Facts

The composition of the sulfide minerals can be expressed with the general chemical formula Am S n, in which A is a metal, S is sulfur, and m and n are integers, giving A2 S, A S, A3 S 4 and A S 2 stoichiometries.

Chemical Formula, Sulphide Types, Properties, Preparation,

Sulphide, also sometimes called sulfide, is sulphur's inorganic anion. Sulphide is basically a compound that contains one or more S 2− ions. The chemical formula of sulphide is also S 2−. Many metallic elements, including sulphides, are …

Naming monatomic ions and ionic compounds

The anion in the compound is S 2 − ‍, which is called sulfide. From the chemical formula, we can see that there are three sulfide ions in this compound. Therefore, these three sulfide ions contribute a net charge of 6-:

Thiols and Sulfides

A disulfide is a compound containing an -S-S- linkage. (Organic) sulfides have the structure R-S-R′, and are therefore the sulfur analogues of ethers. The nomenclature of sulfides can be easily understood if one understands the nomenclature of the corresponding ethers. Notice that the term "thio" is also used in inorganic chemistry.
